News from the SSCIRD The area between Cahernageen Mountains the Macgillycuddy Reeks was recently described by geologist from (GSI) as Europe's riches and best preserved glaciation range from the Quaternary period up to 3 million years ago. It is considered that this area will be the territory of a GEO PARK. While the main emphasis of heritage sites within the territory of the GEO PARK will be geological, sites of archaeological, ecological, historical and cultural heritage will be promoted, including Staigue Fort in Castlecove which is one of Europe's best known Bronze Age Forts. The SSCIRD is now looking at the possibilities to develop an entirely new geo-tourism product.
